NEXT EVENT - RMA PANEL |TUESDAY 17th MARCH 2026 | 6.00PM START | BARRACKS AMMO MEETING ROOM | 170 ST HILL STREET
The Local Water Done Well presentation focused on the practical realities facing Whanganui residents and ratepayers, with particular emphasis on governance, financial sustainability and the long-term direction of council decision-making.
A significant portion of the presentation addressed rising rates and cost pressures, including the drivers behind increasing council expenditure, long-term debt levels and borrowing strategy, infrastructure renewal costs and the financial impact of national reforms on local budgets. The importance of transparent financial reporting and clearer explanations around how major projects are prioritised and funded was strongly emphasised.
Colin discussed the role of elected members, the function of council workshops and how strategic decisions are shaped before formal votes are taken. The presentation highlighted the need for open workshops, improved public access to information and clear lines of accountability between governance and management to strengthen trust and transparency.
The presentation outlined upcoming national planning reforms and their potential local implications, including changes to the Resource Management framework, increased central government direction and reduced public notification requirements. Attendees were encouraged to stay informed and engage early in planning processes to ensure community voices remain part of decision-making.
A strong theme throughout was the importance of active civic participation. Residents were encouraged to attend meetings and workshops, make submissions on plans and policies, ask informed questions about financial and strategic decisions and participate respectfully in public discussions about the future of Whanganui.
The central message of the presentation was that informed and engaged ratepayers are essential to maintaining financial discipline, transparent governance and a strong local democracy for Whanganui’s future.
